2001 Centenary of Federation 20 Cent Clipped Planchet

Interesting clipped planchet error on a State Series Commemorative the Northern Territory 2001 Centenary of Federation 20 cent coin. The first such error we’ve seen on one of these commemorative 20 cent pieces. The curved clip is a decent size and fish-tailing is clear on the ELIZ on the obverse. Fish-tailing of the lettering is due to the outward radial metal flow near the clipped area. The other indication of a genuine clipped planchet, the so called Blakesley Effect is not apparent on this coin. This effect is shown by a flattening of the rim opposite the clipped region of a clipped planchet error. The absence of this indicates that perhaps the planchets for these 20c coins were not rimmed by an upsetting mill prior to the coins being struck.
