Australia 1981 20 Cent PCGS MS62 85% Off Centre Double Strike Out of Collar Error
This 20 cent error has been struck out of collar, then struck for a second time on it’s way out of the press against a blank planchet that was in the press. It is almost the mated pair for this type of error however it is not as the second strike is the wrong way around for these two to be mated. They do fit together for you to get the idea of how this error occurred.
This coin also shows evidence of a strike through, of probably a planchet piece, on the reverse through the 0 of 20. Has some damage on the obverse opposite the double strike either mechanical damage or due to a Mint worker needing to prise it from the press.
This coin is however graded by PCGS as MS62 and lives in an error slab with the description “D/D-2nd Strike 85% O/C On type-I Blank”. A type I blank is an unrimmed planchet which is probably why it failed to seat in the collar and ended up such a dramatic error.
